Inland route from Achmelvich across the Highlands - 8th July
After a night at the Achmelvich Youth Hostel we picked up Matt at the Inchnadamph Explorer's Lodge and did an inland route, a loop through the highlands. The countryside was a lot less mountainous than we expected with many lochs. There was a lot of forestry with many mixed species plantings.
We stoped at the Falls of Shin and did the walk to the waterfall and chatted to some salmon fishermen that reported the fishing season was not going so well. We looked for the Salmon jumping up the waterfalls but no luck. Drove on down the Shin River and stopped at a town called Lairg and had a coffee. Then a drive home along Loch Shin and Loch Merkland and Allt Ceann Locha and Loch Stack. Great countryside with the lakes and mountains.
One feature of the Scottish roads is the single track or single land roads with passing places all negotiate without too much drama. Jim was very lucky driving as he had Maree and Matt to give him lots of advice.
