Sucre

Sucre

We took the local bus from Potosi to Sucre Bolivia's official capital. Sucre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1991 and has retained the flavour of its colonial heritage in its churches, museums, and ancient mansions. Most of the town's colonial buildings have been whitewashed, earning it the nickname the 'White City'. Many parts of the city are well maintained and then contrast to quite rough with lots of rubbish and tagging. This was our tour guides home town so her lovely daughter joined us for meals.  We did a fair amount of walking around the city and enjoyed not having to cope with the altitude here.

We visited Cal Orcko, where 68 million-year-old dinosaur footprints have been discovered. This is the largest collection of dinosaur footprints in the world.  We went to look around the local food and spice markets, some interesting new fruits to try - custard fruit  very nice.  The size of the fruits and veges were impressive.

We also went out to a traditional dance concert. This had a real range of traditional and modern dance including the Gauchos.  The meal with dinner was ok. Prior to the tour we had a guide explain all the costumes that we would see in the show and this gave it further perspective.
