Desierto Siloli – Laguna Colorada
After breakfast, we drove again by 4X4 through the incredible landscapes of the Andean Desert, with another day in the back of beyond, a vast a barren landscape but yet lots to see. We passed the Chiguana Salt Lake, the still-active Ollague Volcano, and other small lakes of different colours. There was usually a flamboyance of flamingos standing nearby! We continued on to the Siloli Desert, which is known for its mountain of seven colours, the Arbol de Piedra and (Stone Tree) rock formations, There were also some pretty epic vistas. We also got the chance to venture into an Andean wildlife reserve (Reserva de Eduardo Avaroa) and walked down to Laguna Colorada (Red Lake), seeing more llamas, flamingos and vicunas. There is also a geo thermal area that was being used as a natural resource for the region.
Once all the sightseeing was over for another day, we stayed in dormitory accommodation in a local Huayllajara community. The altitude here was at 4920 metres, so this made for a very restless night and freezing temperatures overnight - though we did enjoy a hot springs dip just before dinner and with no light pollution a great view of the milky way.
