Puerto Williams Ferry

Punta Arenas to Puerto Williams Ferry 6th and 7th March

Ubered from the BnB about 10.30pm to the ferry due to leave at 1am but we were allowed on at 11pm. All went well but hard to sleep as in recliner chairs and didn’t leave port till 4am. This ferry ride is 32 hours, however the scenery is pretty amazing – I would liken it to the Fiords in South Westland. Again very rugged – it is difficult to capture a photo that does the area justice. The sea is calm and cold outside though not freezing at this stage. Spotted a couple of dolphins when we first woke up. Got to see the glaciers along the way some come almost to the sea. Two sleeps on the ferry which weren’t too bad, the second night we got the lie down chairs. One thing that surprised us is that we were feed with 3 meals a day, a pleasant surprise because we couldn’t read our tickets as they were of course in Spanish! We only spent about 3 hour in the open sea got a bit rougher but not too bad. There were only about 10 passengers on the voyage and we talked to a lady on the previous ferry who said there were about 90 - that would have been a squeeze. We saw whales coming into Puerto Williams. The sea was not rough and the wind and sea was behind us the whole way so made good progress and got to Puerto Williams at about 8am. It is on an island called Island Navarino.

There are a lot of photos below its the best way to show what the voyage was like.

Travelling up the Beagle channel early morning.

Passed this small lighthouse on the first morning.

Thats the voyage on the map as best as I can remember

Try the youtube video on full screen hopefully it works OK

Looking forward along top deck.

Not sure what the cross is for but looks cool in the sunlight.

We passed about four glaciers one down to the sea I think

I think its this one that makes it to the sea couldn't quite see around the land in the foreground.

These two photos of where all the vegetation has beed worn off down to bed rock.

Passed the city of Ushuaia in Argentina early morning moon setting behind mountains.

Sun coming up as we sailed up the Beagle Channel

Whales just out of Puerto Williams
